Recording Anomalies

In this section Lee attempts to analyse and perhaps 'debug' various digital recording anomalies which he has discovered after reviewing the recordings taken at the venues.
All recordings are included in individual reports but this page concentrates on some of the very special ones; analysing and attempting to discover why it happens and what it is.
Click on the hyperlinks below to listen to the recordings, or this link for Lee to give a brief explanation of what an EVP is.

The Nags Head Investigation EVP Analysis

We were only given limited access to the upstairs living quarters at the Nags so it was decided that just Wayne and El would take the recorder and head upstairs. El notes that it is ‘Quite creaky, lots of traffic noise’. El – ‘I want to bring things up, a pulley’. She also gets the impression of an older teenage girl that has ‘taken a shine’ to Lee 2. She seemed to be presenting herself in 1930’s style clothing. She also gets the impression of a finger being waved at her. She then picks up on the name Maisey Dower (or Down). Wayne however, doesn’t pick up on anything. As they conclude the session and leave the room we capture one of our clearest and most impressive EVPs to date. Upstairs Quarters EVP.

The Newmarket Investigation EVP Analysis

Lee has tried and tried to rationalise the instance of the barrel moving and he states he's left with nothing. This EVP is unusual in its self because normally the people present don't hear anything but, as you can tell with Bron's reaction (swearing just a little! but remember most of these things happen in the pitch dark), we all heard the scrapping at the time it happened. Wayne does get closer to the barrels but is still far enough away not to be able to be a logical option that he dragged them. In addition, the doors shown on the photograph were locked meaning there was no way anyone from outside the cellar could be responsible. As you can see from the photos on Ros' personal experience page, it appears that the barrels have not moved. This sound resulted in Ben's collapse and the team panicing a little. Barrel Moving EVP

Electronic Voice Phenomenon

This is the recording of a disembodied voice, a 'ghost' talking, sighing, moaning or otherwise making its presence known. We have made many EVP recordings on our investigations and they vary in quality. Most of the time we manage to capture 'something' but aren't sure what the 'something' is trying to say. We also try to debunk the sounds, however, 'affordable' or 'budget' recording equipment leads to recordings of natural sounds that get subtly changed by the microphone and the processing of the sound by the machine.
On investigations we tend to note when someone has moved during recording or someone simply owns up by saying 'that was me!'

We obviously don't catch them all especially when there are guests present that don't know EVP ettiquette. You would be surprised what can later be thought of as an EVP. Stomachs can rumble, traffic going by, distant revelers on a night out, Wayne's flatulence.....

So when we get a whispery voice where it is unclear if it is genuine, Lee sends the file to team members and gets them to reply with what they think is being said. This is done independently so no-one can influence the outcome. Where it is obviously a voice, where we all agree on a possible gender, and we all agree (or as near as) on what is being said, we can be confident of labeling it 'good evidence'. Whenever there is doubt we mark down possible explanations of natural causes and label it unconfirmed.
